Tenth Annual Adult Spelling Bee
The Brant Skills Centre’s Tenth Annual Adult Spelling Bee to raise funds for adult literacy and essential skill programs was held on Thursday, June 6, 2013 at Braemar House School. The event was smoothly guided by Emcee Anne Buchanan, Pronouncer Leslie Ion, Mulligan Woman Liz Gosse, and officials Robert Chambers, David McKee, and Ed Ackworth. Patticakes’ Bakes helped kick off the evening by providing a delicious bee cake.
The following list of seven teams vied for the coveted first place trophy: Brantford City Council – Knights of the Round Table; Brant Skills Centre – Spellers On Board; Chamber of Commerce – The Chambermaids; Millards – The Bean Counters; Grand River Chorus – The Sharp Notes; St. Leonard’s Community Services – Triple C’s; South Dumfries Historical Society and Adelaide Hunter Hoodless Homestead – The Histerical Society.
In the final phase of the Bee, two teams remained – the Spellers On Board team which included Ann Elwood, Nikki Brooks, Susan Wakeley and the Sharp Notes team – Donna Walker, Penny Telfer, and Betty Decker. After a friendly showdown, the Sharp Notes were defeated by the word “pyrrhic” and the Spellers On Board claimed victory after successfully spelling “sarsaparilla”.
Defeated by the word “inoculate” and coming in third place was Brantford City Council – Dan McCreary, David Neumann, and Debi Dignan-Rumble.
The awesome enthusiasm of the teams as well as the cheering and support from the fans made choosing the winner of the Team Spirit prize difficult. The Chamber of Commerce – Chambermaids were awarded the Team Spirit prizes which were donated by Pizza Hut.
The Chamber of Commerce Chambermaids were also awarded the Literacy Cup – Presented for Excellence in Fundraising. The Cup was graciously donated by Enterprise Brant. Nancy Billard was once again the Highest Pledge Raiser – Way to go Nancy!
