Brant Skills Centre’s Ninth Annual Adult Spelling Bee

The Brant Skills Centre’s Ninth Annual Adult Spelling Bee to raise funds for adult literacy and essential skill programs was held on Wednesday, April 4, 2012 at Braemar House School. The event was smoothly guided by Emcee David McKee, Pronouncer Leslie Ion, Mulligan Man John Gosse, and officials Anne Buchanan, Gerry Fuss, and Ed Ackworth. Domino’s Pizza – (Charing Cross and a new location at 323 King George Road) helped kick off the evening by providing delicious pizza.

The following list of seven teams vied for the coveted first place trophy: Brantford City Council – Knights of the Round Table; Brant Skills Centre – Spellers On Board; Chamber of Commerce – The Chambermaids; Millard, Rouse and Rosebrugh LLP – The Bean Counters; OE Business Imaging – Brant United Way; OE Business Imaging/Grand River Chorus – The Sharp Notes; South Dumfries Historical Society and Adelaide Hunter Hoodless Homestead – The Histerical Society.

In the final phase of the Bee, two teams remained – the South Dumfries Historical Society – Adelaide Hunter Hoodless Homestead team which included Cliff Jones, David Simpson, Catherine Stevenson and Brant Skills Centre – Ann Elwood and Jane Daw. After a friendly showdown, Brant Skills Centre was defeated by the word “plumbeous” and the South Dumfries Historical Society and Adelaide Hunter Hoodless Homestead team claimed victory after successfully spelling “narcissism”.

Coming in third place was OE Business Imaging/Grand River Chorus – Betty Decker, Penny Telfer, and Donna Walker.

The awesome cheering and support for teams made choosing the winner of the Team Spirit prize difficult. With boisterous cheering, Brant Skills Centre and their cheering squad were awarded the Team Spirit prizes which were donated by Domino’s Pizza – King George Road and Tim Hortons – West/Dundas St.

The Chamber of Commerce Chambermaids were awarded the Literacy Cup – Presented for Excellence in Fundraising. The Cup was graciously donated by Enterprise Brant. Nancy Billard was once again the Highest Pledge Raiser – thanks Nancy!
